Selenium is a trace element, which is found in nature and in our diet, but in small amounts. It applies an adjusted control on thyroid hormones, metabolism, and fusion. Study reveals that the selenium supplementation increases the antioxidant activity and helps in reducing the thyroid inflammation. The study was performed on pregnant women, who have antibodies against their thyroids. And the study was successful. There has been a decrease in antibody levels and thyroid inflammation post pregnancy. However, recommendation for the use of selenium regularly in thyroid patients requires further study. The average daily iodine consumption of a normal person is 150 mcg, and this amount of iodine is available in routine balanced diets in America. In breastfeeding and pregnancy, supplementations are recommended to women. One healthy person can easily manage the overdosing of iodine. However unfortunately there are some non-qualified practitioners, who recommend high dosage of iodine to patients who have thyroid abnormalities. Patients who have problems like thyroid nodule or goiter, the effect of iodine administration is significantly cause of worsening hyperthyroidism.
