Thyroid Disease in Pregnancy

No matter how severe or mild hypothyroidism, pregnant women are at high risk for premature birth, miscarriage and or preeclampsia. Studies reveal that mild, untreated or undertreated hypothyroidism can cause lower IQ levels in children. Adjustment of thyroid hormone dosage in women already on this medication before pregnancy is a common problem. The requirements of thyroid hormones increases in pregnancy and the thyroid gland can’t meet these requirements. Your dosage should be immediately adjusted if you are pregnant and already on thyroid hormones like Synthroid and Levoxyl.
